Are you suffering from Post Olympic Blues? A cottage break could be the cure

We have to say that today we feel a little down, bereft of our beloved Olympic sports that provided all the drama and excitement we needed on a daily basis. Today we had no Olympic medal table to check, no sport schedules to check before selecting the best time of day for a quick dash to the shops and no 24 plus channels to watch every sport we could think of an many we couldn’t.

In fact we have been so absorbed by the sporting extravaganza that we haven’t even been updating our blog. But now it’s all over and we are left with a feeling of life will never be quite the same again 😦

However, above all else these superb Olympics did show what a wonderful country we live in, with superb landmarks, diverse culture, and with people a warm and friendly spirit (not forgetting the glorious weather!).

And so with so much going for it, we highly recommend taking a break in Great Britain and there is no finer way than in a self catering cottage or apartment. Whether you have been inspired by the Olympic water sports off Weymouth and the south coast, the equestrian events in the London Royal Parks, the cycling across the home counties or the rowing at Eton, you will find some great self catering holiday cottages close by to explore these wonderful areas of Britain.

Although we are now well in to the summer holidays you can still find some great deals for short breaks or holidays to take advantage of the good weather at locations across Britain and Ireland – perfect for couples, families or groups of friends.

Static Caravans and Mobile Homes for Short Break and Holidays in England Scotland and Wales

At this time of year finding availability at the cottage you want or in the precise area you were looking at can become a bit more challenging, after all some of the very best self catering cottages can be booked quite early.

Even though we have some 13,000 holiday cottages and apartments for you to choose from once we get in to the summer finding the right place for you can be less easy.

If this is the case then it is well worth considering a static caravan or mobile home on a UK holiday park. If you have never considered staying in a holiday home previously it is worth saying that there is a good range of high quality self catering accommodation available that will work for couple, families and even groups.

Don’t let the word caravan put you off, in reality the static caravans are large mobile homes with permanent water and electric connections, with all the facilities and services you would expect in a cottage or apartment including heating, fridge/freezer, oven and hob, toilets (often more than one), showers, sinks, comfortable beds etc. In fact many are often described as lodges such is the overlap in the self catering descriptions these days!

This type of holiday home accommodation can usually be found on holiday parks which means that you can also get access to some great facilities and services such as swimming pools, bars, adult and kids entertainment, gyms, spa, restaurants and lots more all close to your accommodation.

We have added a selection of quality static caravan and mobile homes across England, Scotland and Wales to our Find Cottage Holidays website to offer you an excellent choice. See Static Caravans and Mobile Homes

Olympic Torch Arrival kicks off a Great Summer for the UK

After years of planning today is the day the Olympic Torch finally touches down in the UK and with it kick starts what will be a very special few months this summer.

With the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations just weeks away and the Olympic Torch Relay starting, followed of course by the Games themselves, we are really on a final countdown to what should be an amazing and celebratory period in the British Isles.

So the Torch Relay is the big start of it all and so we are genuinely excited to watch its progress across Britain, as it visits every country and some of our favourite places in the UK over the next 70 days. If you are going to see it or have got some pictures of it why not add it to our Facebook page as we will be tracking its progress over the coming days/weeks.

TORCH WATCH – DAY ONE (19th May) CORNWALL

Well tomorrow (19th May) it starts from the far south-west tip of England, Land’s End in Cornwall. The flame will spend most of the day working its way across the glorious Cornwall countryside passing through some of our favourite holiday destinations including Penzance, Falmouth, Truro, NewquaySt Austell, Bodmin and Liskeard. It will even pass St Michael’s Mount, visit the Eden Project (including a trip in a hot air balloon)  and cross the Tamar Bridge!  The Torch will finish its first day in the UK at Plymouth.

Visiting Cornwall

If you are heading to Cornwall to see the Torch Relay or enjoy a short break or holiday in Cornwall then there are plenty of things to do and see and some great places to stay, here are a few suggestions:

Discover Mid Devon on a Cottage Holiday

It has to be said that Mid Devon can be a little over looked when people are planning their Devon holidays, but Mid Devon is a hidden gem that is perfect for a cottage holiday or short break.

If you have not experienced the delights of Mid Devon before, it can be found between the national parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor (so both are within easy reach for a day trip) and includes towns and villages such as Crediton, Tiverton, Uffculme, Cullompton, Kentisbeare and Bampton.

One of the most notable things about Mid Devon, and one of the reasons we really love it, is that whatever the time of year the traffic is quiet and so you can truly enjoy the winding lanes and open countryside in peace and a rural pace.  The countryside throughout Mid Devon is wonderful, rolling hills, the River Exe and the  Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Blackdown Hills.

Of course another advantage of staying in Mid Devon is that its the perfect place to stay and act as a holiday base for your Devon holiday. Sitting in central Devon you are never far away from 2 National Parks, the coastline, the south-west coastal path and all the other main Devon holiday attractions.

To help you find the best self catering places to stay and more, we have put together a selection of Mid Devon cottage holidays, including Devon apartments and Devon holiday flats.  Perfect for a short break or a holiday for couples, families and groups. Thatched Cottage Holidays in England and Ireland

We have just spent a lovely week in East Devon in a village full of ‘picture postcard’ thatched cottages, Broadhembury is a delightful country village and left us wanting to stay in a pretty thatched cottage next time we set off for a holiday.

So we have been through our cottage database and selected some of the top holiday cottages with thatched roof’s not only in Devon but across England (including Cornwall, Norfolk, Isle of Wight) and Ireland (from Donegal to Wexford) for you to choose from.

Thatched cottages come in all shapes and sizes, so if you thought a thatched cottage was only for couples you would be wrong.  There are plenty available that sleep anything from 2 people to 10 plus – so perfect for a family or a group of friends.  What’s more, although they are old it doesn’t mean that there is any loss of comfort, most of these thatched cottages have been fitted out tot he highest standards with some being perfect for a luxury break.

By their very nature, most thatched cottages tend to be tucked away in peaceful country villages, many close to the coast, or in slightly more remote countryside locations.  This makes them absolutely perfect for a break full of peace and relaxation.
