The Queen Visits Northern Ireland – Inspiring Cottage Breaks in Ireland

Today the Queen has begun a two-day visit to Northern Ireland, covering Belfast and County Fermanagh, as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour.

We were inspired by seeing this beautiful area of Ireland receiving some well deserved positive TV coverage and so we have put together a list of selected holiday cottages in County Fermanagh and Belfast that are perfect for a short break or summer holiday.

County Fermanagh is mainly rural, covers nearly 653 square miles and has a population in the region of 57,000.  The biggest town, and one HM The Queen is visiting on this trip, is Enniskillen which is the county town. The island town has a range of attractions including the Castle Coole Estate and Enniskillen Castle, which is home to the museum of The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.

Other attractions County Fermanagh include Castle Archdale, Crom Estate, Devenish Island, Florence Court and Lough Navar Forest Park.

The Fermanagh County Show is held in August, other good County and Agricultural Shows in Ireland include Balmoral Show in Belfast and the Armagh Show.

Thatched Cottage Holidays in England and Ireland

We have just spent a lovely week in East Devon in a village full of ‘picture postcard’ thatched cottages, Broadhembury is a delightful country village and left us wanting to stay in a pretty thatched cottage next time we set off for a holiday.

So we have been through our cottage database and selected some of the top holiday cottages with thatched roof’s not only in Devon but across England (including Cornwall, Norfolk, Isle of Wight) and Ireland (from Donegal to Wexford) for you to choose from.

Thatched cottages come in all shapes and sizes, so if you thought a thatched cottage was only for couples you would be wrong.  There are plenty available that sleep anything from 2 people to 10 plus – so perfect for a family or a group of friends.  What’s more, although they are old it doesn’t mean that there is any loss of comfort, most of these thatched cottages have been fitted out tot he highest standards with some being perfect for a luxury break.

By their very nature, most thatched cottages tend to be tucked away in peaceful country villages, many close to the coast, or in slightly more remote countryside locations.  This makes them absolutely perfect for a break full of peace and relaxation.
